Building Expansion

Our wonderful learning community is growing as more local families seek to share the many educational opportunities available here at St Joseph’s Primary Schofields.

With the rapid growth in the Schofields area demand for places in the early years of school has meant that for the first time, we will have more than 2 classes in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2. In the years ahead, the school will grow to become a four-stream primary school, ensuring that families in the Schofields area who are seeking a high-quality Catholic education for their children will have that opportunity.

As a result, St Joseph’s Primary will be creating three brand new state-of-the-art learning spaces and facilities for all of our students. These new facilities will mean that learning will have no limits at St Joseph’s, whether it takes place inside or outside of the classroom. Each building will support and enable learning which will nurture faith-filled, curious children to become creative contributors, innovators and problem solvers for a changing world.

The preliminary stages of construction of the new school have begun. Over the course of 2019 Cottages 2, 3 and 4 will be demolished and two new buildings will be constructed. To accommodate the school during construction we will need some extra demountables and the Foundation for the new demountables have now been put in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kindergarten will have 4 classes
Year 1 will have 3 classes
Year 2 will have 3 classes
Years 3-6 will have 2 classes

We anticipate that class sizes will be modest for all grades based on the rate of enrolments we are currently experiencing. Most new students are in the early years of school and with the expanded numbers of classes there is ample room.

COSHC currently has enough spaces for 2019 and we are able to expand further. COSHC will remain in the Community Space during the building phase and will use this space after the new buildings are constructed.

AMAZING. There will be two 2 storey buildings and one 3 storey building clustered around a central atrium space. Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 will be on the ground floor. Year 5,6 will be at the top of the two storey buildings and Years 3 and 4 will fill the top floors of the two storey building. There will be a lift to access the upper floors as well as several staircases. Initially we will have plenty of spare space and this will give us some flexibility whilst construction is happening.

Each building will have an indoor with brand new furniture and technology. Dedicated spaces for art and science will be in each learning space. Younger years will have a practical space for play and older grades for investigative learning. Each learning area will have 2 classes contained within it just like the cottages. Each learning space is larger than the cottages they are replacing.

Each building will open to the outdoor learning space with large undercover spaces. The younger grades will also open to green learning spaces with sandpit, active play areas and gardens. For the older children we can finally offer a basketball court, have areas set aside for playtime activities such as a Lego wall, stages for performances and so much more.

Joining the three buildings will be a giant atrium space both symbolising the unity of our community and practically allowing us to gather together around a symbol of our Catholic faith. This space will also allow active play in all weather.

Our canteen will move and grow into a café that I hope our parents will be able to use in the afternoon.

We will keep our big green play space at the back of the school and increase its area as the Year 2, Year 5 and 6 demountables will go.

Term 2 in 2019. All going well the two double storey buildings will be ready by the end of 2019 and the three- storey building in 2020.

NO!

Each space is only large enough for 2 classes and there are walls between the classes.

NO! We need to accommodate the growing community around our school but will remain a relatively small school for the area.

Kindergarten will be in its regular cottage and also the library. The library will be moved to another location that can be accessed by the children. By the end of the year they should be in their new building. There will be 4 Kindergartens with a small class size.

Year 1 will be in the current Year 2 demountable classrooms and the demountable currently being used by Aspect. There will be three Year 1 classes with a small class size.

Year 2 will be in the current Year 5 and 6 demountables. There will be three Year 2 classes with small class sizes. Our Aspect unit, K6 Gold, will occupy the 4th classroom in that space.

Years 3-6 will be in the demountables on Area 3. There will be 2 classes for each of these grades.
