At St Joseph's we offer a range of competitive and recreational sports and activities to cater for students' interests and abilities.
Students may also compete in swimming, athletics and cross-country at zone, diocesan and inter-diocesan levels. Students have access to all levels of representation, from local to national, in their particular sport.
In addition to a wide range of sporting activities, we run a school fitness program. Sport days are Wednesday and Friday. On these days all children wear their sports uniform. Children may be required to bring their sneakers to school on other days, for the school fitness program.
School sport provides opportunities to experience new games and sports, develop talents in sports and recreation activities.
Cross country
This event is usually held in Term 1. The students undergo training in the weeks leading up to the event by gradually building the distance they run. Just prior to the cross country the children’s level of fitness and ability to participate in this event is evaluated. The cross-country is held on a school day and all students in Stage 2 and 3 are expected to attend.
Students who perform well in the event may go on to a zone cross country event.
Athletics carnival
Held in Term 2, all students from Year 2 to Year 6 participate. The children may nominate to take part in long distance races or field events, such as long jump, high jump, shot put, etc.
Student performance determines whether they will progress on to the zone athletics carnival.
Gymnastics program
Gymnastics is a component of the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) syllabus. In Term 2, qualified gymnastics teachers come to our school and present intensive 40 minutes lessons over eight weeks (one lesson per week). The program is run by Riverstone Tumbling.
Swimming carnival
Held in Term 4, students from Year 3 to Year 6 (and competent Year 2 swimmers), attend and nominate their preferred event. There are novelty events to cater for beginner swimmers.
Students who excel at school level may progress on to zone swimming.
